The assignment was given: “Color from Light.” In the assignment we were encouraged to research several photographic artists as well as photograph a few images of our own that resonated “Color from Light.”
I have to admit that I struggled with this assignment; unsure of how to approach making an image that was totally dependent on the quality of the light used. In my research, an artist whose work I especially enjoyed viewing was that of Uta Barth. For more info, visit Guggenheim.
One morning I went outside around 5:15 to discover a dense fog. Contemplating how the fog affected the light source; thinking about the work of Uta Barth; and trying to fulfill my assignment, I captured these two images.
It was also interesting to view the work of the other students in the class. Each student approached the assignment a little differently, using their own personal creativity. One explored colored gels; another smeared Vaseline on a filter to emphasize color but not the object; and yet another found induced camera motion and colored lights to create interesting images.
I’m really enjoying the mental stimulation of being a student again. Thanks Paducah School of Art and Alison Hahn!
